MLB Baseball Betting - Playoff Preview

It took the entire 162-game schedule for some teams to stake their claim in baseball's postseason, but after a thrilling Sunday the stage is set for an October to remember.

MLB betting begins Wednesday when three of the four playoff series kick off, while the Braves and Giants start their NLDS showdown on Thursday. Here's a quick look at all four matchups:

- New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins

A good way to cap the league divisional series is to go with the team playing the best baseball heading into the playoffs. By that school of thought, MLB bettors should be fading the New York Yankees with two fists. New York fell short in the season finale against the Red Sox, losing the AL East title and winning just three games in its last 10 outings.

The tricky thing is, the Twins are playing less-than-stellar baseball as well, picking up only two victories in their last 10 contests.

Minnesota lost the season series with the Yankees, going just 2-6. And going back into the past, the Twins are just 18-54 in the past 72 meetings with the Bronx Bombers. Minnesota at least has home-field advantage in the ALDS, but won't have MVP first baseman Justin Morneau back for the opening round while he continues recovering from a concussion.

- Texas Rangers at Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays took back-to-back wins to earn the top seed in the American League. However, due to the Yankees taking the Wild Card, Tampa Bay is forced to take on the AL West champs. The Rays and Rangers faced each other six times in 2010, with Tampa Bay winning the final four meetings.

Totals bettors will be faced with some tough numbers in the ALDS. The Rays and Rangers are two of the top offensive clubs in the majors, ranking fifth and third in scoring. Tampa Bay played under the MLB betting totals in nine of its final 10 games of the schedule, while Texas has stayed below the number just twice in the past 10 outings.

- Cincinnati Reds at Philadelphia Phillies

Baseball bettors were waiting for the Reds to come back to earth all season long. That doubt helped keep Cincinnati's MLB betting odds stuffed with value while the team kept winning, all the way to an NL Central title. The Reds will lean heavily on their bats after ranking among the Top 5 in most offensive categories. Cincinnati hit .267 against Philadelphia, going 2-5 versus the defending NL pennant winners this season.

Philadelphia looks like the team to beat in the MLB postseason. The Phillies picked up steam following the All-Star break and haven't slowed down as the calendar turns to October. The pitching staff is the team's biggest strength. The three-man rotation of Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, and Cole Hamels nearly guarantees Philly three wins right off the bat.

Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants

The Braves are playing with a ton of emotion this October. Manager Bobby Cox is retiring after the season and Atlanta would love nothing more than to give one of baseball's greatest skips the ultimate swan song. The Braves rode that emotion to four wins in their final six games and the NL Wild Card birth.

San Francisco made backers wait until the final game of the season before clinching the NL West title. The Giants are a very dangerous team with the likes of Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Barry Zito, and Jonathan Sanchez on the staff. They could steal games on the road with their exceptional rotation and deep bullpen. San Fran was 3-4 versus Atlanta this season but the Braves are just 1-6 in their last seven trips to the Bay Area.
